During my residency at Design Museum Gent, as part of Do The Right DING!, I explored the potential of local waste streams as a source for new materials.
Working alongside the production of the Gent Waste Brick by BC Materials, I experimented with ground waste glass and concrete, combining them with other local materials such as broken roof tiles and Schelde river clay.
Using rammed earth techniques to mimic natural sedimentation, I explored different craft, material compositions, textures and forms. The result is Ghent Marble: two sculptural side tables made from compressed waste materials, layered with Schelde river clay. The subtle lines and textures reveal the different materials, much like the layers found in natural stone.
Ghent Marble brings together the remnants of the city and its surroundings, exploring how discarded materials can find new value and purpose through design.
